Epilepsy Association Statement on Medical Marijuana
The Epilepsy Association supports the rights of patients and families living with seizures and epilepsy to access physician directed care. Three million Americans live with epilepsy and one-third of these people have ongoing treatment-resistant seizures. Treatments for epilepsy with any form of marijuana come with risks, as there is much that is not known about its effects. The Epilepsy Association recognizes the emerging need for scientifically rigorous investigations into the mechanisms and efficacy of cannabidiol (CBD) for the treatment of epilepsy. The Epilepsy Association supports all well-controlled studies that will lead to a better understanding of the disease and the development of safe and effective treatments for epilepsy. This is a very important, difficult, and personal decision that should be made by a patient and family working with their healthcare team.
